==================================================================================

Dear NATWA Sisters,

Year 2012 has begun as you are reading this newly published NATWA Journal #46. I would like to start this newsletter by sending my heartfelt greetings to you - Wishing you all a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year.

As I look back at what we have achieved together in the past eight months, I am so grateful for what you have done for the welfare of our association. My sincere “Thank you” goes to the members of Board of Directors; leaders of the Regional Chapters, Local Chapters, Programs and Activities, Special Projects; and officers and staff members of NATWA 2011. It is with such unselfish commitment of all of you that our organization has accomplished much in the past 24 years.

The Mid-year Meeting and Leadership Training Camp were held at the Clarion Hotel in Detroit on October 21-23, 2011. More than 100 of our members joined together for seminars and for the pre- and post-conference tours. Behind the scenes were the local members (and their families) led by Bilan Jeng who contributed time and effort to make the gathering a great success. They wowed us all with smiles on their faces and the well-planned activities. I couldn’t have thanked them enough!

Our workshops leaders were – Dr. Tzu-Hui Chen and Dr. Yin Lin. Tau-Hui received her Ph.D. in July 2011 and teaches at the Graduate Institute of Sociology of Education (GISE) at Nanhua University in Taiwan. As soon as she learned that more than 100 people would be at the workshops, she recruited her friend from her Arizona State days. Ann now lives and teaches in Colorado. At the end of her busy teaching week, she hopped on the red-eye special on Friday evening and headed for Detroit. Two of them designed and conducted fun activities that made the participants think and laugh throughout the sessions. We are much obliged to TsuiHui and Ann for their generous sharing of their knowledge. They sure are the workshop leader “extraordinaire”!

At the Mid-Year convention, we unveiled NATWA’s second scarf. (The first one was designed by Lucy-Lu Huang and issued in 2003.) This beautiful silk scarf named “Happy” was designed by our fellow member, artist Nami Lee. It was well-received by all. If you wish to own one of these beautiful scarves, please submit the order form enclosed in this journal. You may also purchase it at our Annual Convention in April.

The World Federation of Taiwanese Association (WFTA) was held in Costa Rica at the end of September 2011. During the convention, our networking leader, Ingrid Liu, arranged a get-together for our NATWA members to meet with the members of the Taiwanese Women’s Association of Costa Rica. Ninety of our NATWA sisters enjoyed the Meet and Greet at this 10th Annual Meeting of FOTWA (Federation of Overseas Taiwanese Women’s Association). In January 2012, many of us are traveling to Taiwan to cast their votes at the Presidential Election. Once again, Ingrid is planning activities for us to meet and spend time together there. One of the activities is visiting “One Drop of Water Memorial House” in Tamsui. We are looking forward to a great gathering then.

The NATWA’s theme of the year is “Love and Compassion”. Let us extend the sentiments of love and acts of compassion to the people of our homeland Taiwan, and to the communities of our adopted countries, Canada and the US.

Our Annual Convention will be held on April 19-22, 2012, in the Silicon Valley in California. The post-convention tours immediate follow on April 22-25. Please make your airline reservation early when the discount fares are available. You may wish to book your flight to either San Francisco (SFO) or San Jose (SJO). If you choose to join the tours, either the half-day or the 3-day/ 2-night tour, please plan on the return flight that is after 9 p.m. The detailed information will be listed in the January issue of the NATWA Newsletter.

Last but not least, I would like to give BIG “Thank you” to Julia Chang and Sophia Huang for creating the Issue #46. When Mei Lu (Head of Publishing) saw the beautifully and brightly designed cover, she uttered the word “Tsan!” in exultation . We couldn’t agree with her more!!

Sincerely,
Anna Chang
